Getting alkalai build up out of swamp cooler pads?
Question:i've tried vinegar... it smells. i was told to mix baking soda and water then pour over cooler.isn't baking soda an alkalai?

These product do not clean, I don't know why people try them, lack of knowledge?
Get some "Works" from Wal-Mart, in a spray bottle, take the pads and put them in the yard, somewhere the kids don't play and spry them with the "Works", both sides, wear rubber gloves.
Let it sit for awhile then hose them down real good, see if it needs another coat. This should be done in the spring and fall before storage.
Baking soda is an alkaline substance. Chemists refer to it as a "base".
Get a bottle of "CLR". It's available at many grocery and ***mart stores. It'll be in household cleaners section. Many hardware stores carry it also. It's in a silver grey plastic bottle w/ the initials CLR printed on it. CLR stands for Calcium, Lime, Rust. It is formulated to remove mineral salt buildups and rust. In my experience it is the best I've ever used for removing mineral salt buildup. It's just so-so at removing rust. There's no rubbing or scrubbing involved. Follow the directions on the bottle for use. If your buildup is heavy, more than 1 application may be required. CLR is safe for coffee pots too.
Vinegar will work but you must soak the pads in straight vinegar for several hours. Spritzing it or brushing it on won't work.
Why go through all that hassle? Just buy new pads and replace, they are not expensive. I replace mine every year.
