Is it easier to maintain a granite or a stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen over my Viking cook range?
Question:We have granite countertops but I hear stainless steel is a lot harder to keep clean, especially over a range. I want to be sure, however, before I spend the money on granite. Any info will be welcome. Thanks.
Answers:
Go with the granite. Stainless steel will pick up grease stains from splattering foods, and you run the risk of scraching the metal when you scrub it. The granite cleans easier, and is more forgiving if you clean with an abrasive pad. Also the granite will tie your counter and cook areas together, giving a better appearance.
granite.
we used granite because i've a friend who installed the steel backsplash and she is really unhappy with constantly cleaning it.
Granite would ultimately be easier to keep clean because it is very durable and can easily be wiped clean.
Stainless steel is just that-steel that stains less. This does not mean that it will not stain just that it stains less than normal steel.
I had a stainless steel back-splash. Forget it, it never looked clean and shiny for more than 5minutes once it was cleaned. As soon as I started cooking it looked terrible again. It ended up with scratches from all the cleaning.
I changed it to Granite, It is a pleasure. Wipe it down and it looks clean even while your cooking. I was a slave to my stainless steel back-splash.
2 of my sons learned from my experience, and last year one remodeled his kitchen, and got the Granite. My Daughter-in- law who never had anything good to say about me thanks me till this day. My other son, just put in a new kitchen, and is also purchasing granite. Yes it is more expensive, but it is worth more than gold. Even just regular old fashioned tiles are better than a stainless steel back-splash.
Enjoy your new cooking range.
I cook in a lot of homes that have granite back splashes and a few that have stainless steel--I also have a granite back splash.
Why? For the same reason I don't have a stainless fridge or dishwasher--every little thing shows up on the stainless, every wipe mark, food splash, oil spatter and hand print is there for all to see--making it a constant necessity to keep it wiped down.
I still wipe down my granite often but it doesn't look as unsightly right after cooking a meal as stainless does.
I do the same for my clients but the stainless causes more work, more often--because they usually have all appliances that match when they choose stainless.
The granite doesn't show scratches or dents either--but stainless sure does.
Good luck
