Pest control...?

Question:My freind is a single parent to two children and is a council tenant who is going out of her mind because the property she lives in is overrun with flying ants they are EVERYWHERE she has resorted to herself and two children sleeping in the same room , a request has been made to the council to remove the pests but she was very rudely told that they are her problem and the only way the council will help is if she pays £60 which she does not have as she is on benefits , surely the council are liable? can anyone please help?

Answers:
I suggest she ring her local councillor right away. I'd be surprised if it was not the council's responsibility and they should be obliged to at least point her in the direction of help as she is a single parent.

The ant killing powder will help, but the will recur unless she is able to find the source and block the whole. Best done by an expert.

Buy ant killing powder from a garden centre.
Flying ants are only a problem for a few days each year, she needs to find the nest and pour boiling water on it, once that is done she needs to fill the opening of the nest with ant powder.
Flying ants are not really classed as a pest, she needs to buy an insect spray and open all the windows. I dont think the council will pay for this, even if it were wasps she still has to pay.
the powder is good but with children it may not be such a good idea, are there any sprays for them, maybe they are under the house or around the bathroom as far as where the "nest" could be,if you are in an apartment then they could be coming from a neighbor, maybe buying screens would help keep them out too.
unfortunatly the council are right in what there saying, i had a similar prob myself but saying that the council didn't charge no way near 60 pounds it was more like 20, tell her to try some products you can by from the shop first before she pays for any expensive treatment!
The most important thing is to find where they are coming in.
Then block it.I used the expanding foam, you can push the nozzle right into the hole.
Suggest contacting Citizens Advice. If it is the case that it is HER problem as Council said, maybe she should contact Social Security to see if there are any grants available. Contacting a Health Worker may also be of assistance. She could try buying Dethlac ant spray. This dries quickly, use it as instructions on can. It is not very expensive and I have always found it very efficient. Good luck to her.
