If you are going to do this your self go to a home improvement store and get some cleaner designed for smoke and soot removal then paint the room with a smoke blocking primer before using regular paint. Have your carpets, furniture, etc cleaned and ventilate the house. Your insurance company may pay for professionals who specialize in restoring homes damaged by fire, water or mold.
First of all you do you Homeowners Insurance that can pay you to have someone come in and do a Total Cleaning Job? If not you are gonna have to totally repaint, Vacumn the walls, counters, corners you name it, you see it, its got to be cleaned. The Carpet will have to be steam cleaned to remove the Black Soot and Smell. Keep the Windows raised when possible. Good Luck, Thats a tough Job..
Krud Kutter! I had a fire in February and used this stuff to wash the soot off of the walls, most of my furniture, my wood work and molding and most of my belongings. It can be found in the cleaning aisle at the Lowes home improvement center. It is non-toxic, has no fumes, but cuts through the soot and smoke like nothing else did. Sometimes I used it in a 3:1 ratio and other times I used it straight. You can even load it in a steam cleaner and use it on the upholstered furniture and carpet. It will get that smokey smell out.
you local home center ie home depot carries a product called killz its a paint that hides the black as well as the smell
good luck
