Can you put yacht varnish on outdoor decking?
Question:I don't want to use decking oil, so i was wondering if you could paint the decking with Yacht varnish?
Answers:
Yacht varnish will have the water protectant but not the UV protectant. Use Sikkens SRD (Siding, Roofs, Decks) or Rubbol Deck Finish. Another great one is Sansin Dec or Sansin PTL if it's treated wood. Is the deck new? Never stained or painted? Make sure you give it a light sanding to remove the mill glaze before staining or painting. Mill glaze is formed on all wood when going through planners or cutters, bonding the fibers of the wood together, creating poor penetration of stain.
yes
I would say yes to this, it might even be more hardwaring than oil.
You could but it won't last long - it will start peeling very quickly when the sun (if the sun) comes out and people walk across it. Oil is used because it soaks into the wood - Varnish sits on the wood.
wouldn't it get slippery in the rain?
It's not really suitable for walking on. It's great on vertical surfaces outside. Stick to the recommended method.
Yes you can use it but I wouldn't recommend it. Oil or paint is better to actually penetrate and treat the wood to keep it waterproof and in good condition. Varnish as others have pointed out will peel over time as it gets scuffed by people walking over it.
definately,works well,15 months since i installed mine
you can but it an expensive way to seal it
Great stuff , however if you go barefoot w/ the deck in the sun, you can blister your feet...badly.
Thats one reason decks are oiled rather than varnished.
