Waterproofing my roof?
Question:I am planning on repainting my entire flat roof. After years of rain damage, there are many bumpy spots. Is there any need to remove these bumps? And what kind of paint/coating should I be looking for?
Answers:
after years of rain damage, you may need a tear-down.
IF this roof has been leaking for years, I suspect the under decking is rotting...certainly unsafe to walk on. If you want a good roof, I suggest that you remove the existing roofing material, inspect the decking. If it is rotting, remove and replace. For a quick fix, use roofing compound that has fiberglass strands in it...apply several coats, not one thick one. Thick coats tend to dry and shrink, leaving cracks. Aluminized roof coating works very well, reflects heat. You do not have to remove the bubbled roofing to make it water proof, but anything you do now is just a delay in putting on a new roof. Good luck
I would agree with the above answer. You can either remove the bumpy spots, or remove the full coating that is on the roof currently.
It would be best then to apply a exterior grade membrane that would be durable (you can walk on it), that comes in a range of colours and would of course be waterproof. This would also have a fibre glass component in it.
This work is not difficult to do at all so you could do it your self of get a waterproofing contractor to do it for you. Have a look at the below link looking at two possible methods (Products Microl 2000 - Heavy Duty Membrane and F. R. Micraflex - External Membrane).
There is also useful application information that can show you how to apply the membrane in easy to follow steps.
