Home AC. Can I save electricity if I close the vent in the living room and open only the vent in the bedroom

Question:Auto on feature does not work properly when I closed the vent in the living room. AC run continuously.

Answers:
you shouldnt never close any vents as this reduces the amount of air flow through the a-coil and will cause damage to your system...if the thermostat is closer to the livingroom and the return air vent is closer to the bedroom than the living room then there would be no air circulation for the thermostat to detect the cooler air unless you got the house cooler than needed to cause the unit to shut off..you would save more money by finding a temperature that is comfortable to you and always leave the unit set on this temperature and always leave all the vents open.If you buy a programmable thermostat then you can set it to allow your unit to come on in the early morning to cool your house down to a lower temperature than you would set it to keep the temperature at night...

The best way to save electricity is to up the temp that the AC kicks in at. Closing off vents typically doesn't help save $ on heating or AC.
There are many reasons why this may or may not work. First off if your thermostat is located in or near your living room, you will be wasting more energy than saving.
If you never cool your living room down to the desired temperature then the thermostat will never turn off the AC. However if your thermostat is in or near your bedroom and your living room has a door so that you can isolate the room from the rest of your house, then you can save some money.

It is possible your bedroom air conditioning is not set correctly. There are things called 'dampers' which control the flow of air to each room. If you find the rest of your house is cool while your bedroom is warm, you may need an adjustment.
the ac will run until the thermostat gets the correct temp, if the thermostat is in the living room, then it is trying to cool that room to the desired temp, so it is running constantly trying to cool the living room. you want to leave the vent open in the room where the thermostat is.
Set AC temp to 75 at night and during the day 78 at its lowest.
Use a fan that blows on you during the day and night
You will save 20% a month
the thermostat is set at a certain temperature, the ac will try to meet that temperature whether one vent is closed or not,it will still try to cool that room off,if its located in living room,it will try to satisfy that temperature.if you want to save energy keep the thermostat around 77 degrees.
Although night setback is recommended during the winter for most types of heating system to save and reduce costs, it is generally not recommended for a heat pump unless a programmable thermostat designed expressly for use with a heat pump is used. When you have a heat pump and raise the house temperature in the morning, the supplementary heat may come on using more electricity than you saved during the night. Reduce the thermostat temperature settings for weekend trips or vacations during the heating season. The use of a standard automatic nighttime setback control with a heat pump is not recommended. Many manufactures now provide programmable thermostats designed for night setback so that the supplementary heaters will not normally be energized during the time that the heating system is recovering. Do not block registers and return grills with furniture, draperies, or rugs. Although cutting off heat to unused rooms is frequently suggested as a conservation measure, we recommend that all supply registers for a heat pump be left open. The system is designed to heat or cool a specific space. If air circulation is reduced drastically, the compressor may be damaged.
I am not a AC mechanic but I am a licenced gasfitter. I would check the location of your thermostat which controls the AC temp.
