Is my zippo lighter faulty??
Question:Hi, ive just bought a zippo lighter and filled it up with the zippo lighter fluid. When i open the lid and light the zippo, the flame jumps across to the gas which is in the lid and the lid creates a mini fire!! Is my zippo faulty or is gas meant to build up in the lid?? Also, if gas does build up in the lid if i left it for a couple of days might the pressure build up so much that it explodes?? Please help, im worried!!

yes they do this if you over fill them.
No it will not explose, the lid is not gas tight, so it will evaporate and dissipate through the gap where the lid meats the body.
either live with it, or allow it to burn down of its own accord, till you bet the normal sized flame you would expect.
Next time you fill it do it over a sink, pull out the middle bit with the wick, turn it upside down, lift the felt pad from the bottom, and squeeze the fluid on to the stuff that looks like cotton wool beneath, as soon as you see the first drip come out from the wick underneath, you've filled enough.
Press the felt pad back, re insert the middle bit into the case, and spark her up, to burn off any excess lighter fluid.
Close the top, and off you go for a smoke, job well done.
No, it's fine. They often do this when you first fill them; it eases off after a few lights.
Better to fill your Zippo less full, but more often.
You just overfilled your Zippo. No, it isn't faulty. Set it on a tool bench in the garage or on a napkin on the bathroom counter until the excess lighter fluid evaporates.

Mail it to Zippo and they will either repair it or send you a new one. The GI''s in world war 2 had Zippo lighters.Never had any problems with them. My opinion, you just bought a bad lighter. The only thing that would cause it is the wick is pulled up too high. When first filling the lighter, it will do that, if filled with too much lighter fluid. It will leak down to the lid. so nothing to worry about. The only lighters that will explode are Butane lighters, I have had a few that have blown up, Zippos are safe.
In my smoking days I too have had zippo lighters.
What you have described is normal when the lighter is first filled. I got into the habit of flipping the lid open and moving my hand about 4 or 5 inches away from me as I flipped the 'wheel'. This would normally disperse any gas that had built up in the lid.
Absolutely no need to worry, it is impossible for the gas in the lid to 'pressurise'.
P.S. I know it says in your little booklet you got with the lighter that you should use only Zippo lighter fluid, but all lighter fluids are near enough the same (eg. Ronson), and are usually easier to find.

Yes its to full, I carried one while in Viet nam they came in handy , Sometimes I was the only one with fire everyone Else had wet matches , Don't worry about it your lighter is fine hope this helps
I have owned many zippo's in my time and the answer is you have over filled it
