Are there any restrictions as to how close to the peak of your roof that you can vent a range hood fan?
Question:If I go straight up from my cook stove (gas) I will only be two feet from the peak of my roof. Could that result in any down draft problems? I have room to angle elsewhere into the roof but I thought the best route would be straight up. How far should I extend the vent pipe above the roof line?
Answers:
Check with your local building codes and see if they say anything about it and check the installation instructions for the range hood and see what it recommends.
Not if you angle the pipe or called a stove pipe, 2 feet shouldn't make any difference. The vent pipe shouldn't be any more than 12" to 18" above the roof line with a vent cover to keep out dust. The only time you will get dust coming down is when the wind is blowing very hard. I cover my screen filter in front of the fan area closes to the stove, with foil, otherwise when cooking you will get dirt in your food unless you cover what you are cooking. Once the wind dies down remove the foil and clean the screen with hot soap and water, dry it and install
I would keep it down a little from the peak simply for aesthetic reasons, no need to see the cap from both sides. The hood will have a damper to prevent back draft.
