Why do people tape their windows?
Question:Why do people tape their windows during a storm? Its obvious that it won't prevent it from breaking. Is it so that the glass won't fly everywhere or be contained in a certian area?
Answers:
Actually it will help to stop a window from breaking in some cases. It shores up the window against small and blunt objects. It also keeps the windown from smashing into a million pieces when it breaks. Taping ones wrists before a football game wont stop the wrist from being harmed, but it will sure help, same thing.
That being said stay away from the window as there is a good chance it will come in during a big storm.
In the old days, it was believed taping a big X on your window would prevent the windows from breaking in a hurricane. People that don't have shutters try this and pray for the best!
But the truth is, taping the windows doesn't do anything worthwhile.
Depending on the strength of the storm. If you have leaky windows and wind and rain is hitting the windows, tape won't really stop it, it may slow it down a bit, unless you use "DUCT TAPE" that will stop anything. It is a very strong tape. I haven't ever seen duct tape rip apart.
It was invented for the military in ww2, but named duck tape, later it was changed to duct tape, the best thing to use is plywood covering the windows with duct tape and nails and/or long screws.
slows down the shattering effect of the glass when smashed
It is an old myth that doesn't work. Rely on some good plywood, anchored securely.
You would have to use duct tape to do any good, and then you would never get it off, and end up replacing the windows.
NOW YOU ARE TOLD TO NOT BOTHER TAPING WINDOWS BECAUSE IT DOES NOT DO ANY GOOD- IF YOU WANT TO DO GOOD TO INSTALL PLYWOOD SHIELD OVER THE OUTSIDE..
