What causes gas cap leaks on weedwackeers?

Question:

Answers:
There is a gasket just inside the cap. It may be cracked or missing. It is suppose to allow the tank to vent but not leak.

bad gasket. check it out
Unfortunately it has to leak a little. Both temperature changes and movement causes gas to vaporize. This gas has to vent or it can cause the gas tank to explode...not a good thing. Unfortunately some liquid also vents, causing the leak. You can get an electric weedwacker if your yard is small enough, if not, just wear old old clothes and deal with it, or use the old fashioned, non-powered, sheers.
