Can I put molding on stairs where the tread meets the riser?
Question:I just removed carpeting from the stairs in my house and stained the stairs. There are unsightly staple marks where the tread meets the riser. Is it OK/appropriate/unusual to put molding there to cover the staple marks? Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem about a year ago. I used a cove molding and it looked great. I painted the stairs themselves white since they weren't in great shape and then used the fake oak cove molding and it looked fantastic.
Yes. I would recommend a narrow (3/4") quarter round molding. Personally I think cove molding it way too wide.
cove molding, shoe molding, 1/4 round all look great. I also suggest seting those nail holes with a nail set and putting wood putty in the holes. another good cover up thats not as expensive. but the molding will work also.
I never use wood putty on wood. It takes too long to set.
Use Car body filler, buy a cheap brand as you are not going to use it on a car.
Mix it, fill the holes, wait 10 minutes, sand it (It comes up like a mirror if you need it too) and then stain it.
Moulding should be as small as you can get it. Somebody is going to go bum over boob because we expect a tread to be as wide as the rest of the worlds. A norrow on (Caused by the moulding) will be a trip hazard.
Isn't it you home? You should do what you want as long as it doesn't create a triping hazzard I think it's fine.
cove molding will work great, most open stair caises i have built have always had molding for that very reason. go for the molding it adds a nice finished tuch
