The flue on my chimney does not go above the cement block. How can I put a chimney cap on?

Question:The chimney is deteriorating due to water getting in the cement block.

Answers:
While there are caps that can be slid down inside the chimney flue, those caps do not correct the problem you are having of water running down the flue. To correct this problem is relatively simple. Step 1) Go to the top of the chimney and measure the outside dimensions of the tile or tiles that are not tall enough. Step 2) Go to your local brickyard that sells flue tiles, and have them cut a section of flue tile for you 8" long of the same size tile. (The tiles are 24" so if you need only one there will be 16" left over) Step 3) Purchase a small bucket of hydraulic cement or quick setting cement from the brickyard with your section of flue. Step 4) Purchase a cap that will fit the outside dimensions of the flue section you just had cut at the brickyard, a hardware store or other location. Step 5) Set up your ladder and other gear to get to the top of your chimney. Step 6) Read the directions on the bucket of cement you purchased, the set-up time may be only a couple minutes. Step 7) Go to the top of the chimney and with a wire brush, clean the surface of the cement and tile that you need to extend. Step 8) Take, water, the cement you purchased, the 8" tile section, and a small trowel to the top of the chimney. Step 9) Set the 8" tile section you had cut on top of the chimney, positioning it properly over the existing tile. Step 10) Following the directions on the bucket of cement you purchased, and working quickly, mix enough cement to apply a band approximately 2" up on the new tile section. Work it in with the trowel and slope it so that there is a nice taper from the tile to the existing cement top of your chimney. You want water to run off this new surface quickly. ( an edge view of the cement you are applying would look like a triangle) Step 11) Allow the new cement to dry according to the directions. Step 12) Install your new chimney cap to keep water from running down inside the flues. Carefully done, this repair will last many years. If you don't have the skills or desires to perform this task, you can hire a local professional chimney sweep to do this for you. Good Luck!
