Do Ceiling Fans Really Make Your House Cooler?
Question:I have ceiling fans at my house, but it's almost ALWAYS cooler outside than inside. I feel like no matter how much I try to circulate the air, it's bloody hot inside.
Am I wrong for thinking ceiling fans keep the house cool?
Answers:
ceiling fans do help cool a house. Make sure the fan is turning clockwise. if not it's not going to help. There should be a switch on the side of the motor to change directions.
I think they really help circulate the air. But they are pretty helpful other than that.
they circulate the air. i live in florida so the air is going for 6 months out of the year b/c of our humidity. so the fans help blow cool air around.
Yes. When it's really hot, they 'just' move hot air around, but moving air is cooler, too. That's why a 'breath of wind' often feels so good.
It feels warmer inside because the air is trapped by walls and ceilings. Are you keeping windows open for more circulation? And are you keeping curtains and shades closed to keep it shady? Sunlight is also heat.
Of course, if you have AC, you will want to keep the windows closed, but if you are cooling primarily with fans, you want to add circulation.
There are times when any coolness just doesn't seem to exist. Take a cool shower and wait a bit. The weather will change. It usually does.
yes ceiling fans keep cold air down like a/c it will always be colder the lower you get
That question has always sparked debate due to the fact that the motors on them actually create heat when they run. If you do however have cooled air in the house and run the fans to circulate this air they can in fact be of benefit to you.
check the direction of the fan to see if it's blowing downward
No. Fans do not cool the air. They only move it around and that can make you feel a little cooler. But the air is the same temperature with or without them.
No you are right. Ceiling fans circulate the air that's in the house.
Cool air stays around the floor while hot air rises.
When your AC pushes cool air in the room, a ceiling fan draws the cool air up and cools the room faster.
You might just need to reverse your fans direction, depending on the season.
In the winter set the fan to blow warmer air downwards and in the summer reverse it to pull cooler air up from the floor.
Lots of people forget to do this. It does make a difference.
