I am not getting any power to my central air unit, the breaker has not tripped, what should I do?
Question:I have discovered that I am not getting any power to the thermostat either. I have tested the contacts within the thermostat for power to no avail. The breaker is not tripped, I am new to this house, and cannot locate a fusebox, can someone help?
Answers:
Check to see if your furnace blower is working for one, if not there should be a switch like a light switch close to the furnace, this switch shuts off all power to the furnace and could be the reason for no power at the thermostat. Also check to see where the main power comes into the house, the fuse panel will be inside most likely on that wall close to the entrance point. If not check your closets alot of times they are put there out of veiw. Also on older homes even though a breaker is on the ac unit it still might have the older round glass type fuses, if so determine wich of these is for your ac unit it should be a sepperate box containing 2 glass 30 amp fuses, and replace them this is 220 volt. If you still have a problem check inside the furnace for a control box for the thermostat and see that the wires have,nt been removed, this is usually located on the front inside bottom where you light the pilot behind the front panel.
1. Check the service disconnect. (Some of these have fuses or breakers also.)
2. Test the relay.
3. Inspect the wiring.
4. Call a tech.
you will have a fuse box next to the condensor outside.
you absolutely should locate the fusebox. This will be essential for your time at the house.
Some AC units have a condensation resevoir that automatically shuts it down when it fills. This usually means that the drain is obstructed or clogged - look for a PVC pipe or otherwise leading from the unit.
If you cannot locate the fuse box to verify the breaker has not tripped. Then call a hvac person to have it checked out.
Look on the outside unit near the bottom there is a small button. push that in. it is your reset button and the unit should start up on its own,
Check the transformer in the furnace. Your thermostat is powered by a 24 volt transformer in yout furnace. It provides the power for your contactor coil on your compressor and your fan relay for the blower. A good way to check the transformer is to turn your thermost to fan. If the fan does not kick on then you probably have a problem with the 24 volt side. Some transformers have a fuse or a reset button.
Assuming the furnace is connected, turned on, and receiving power: There is a fuse in some furnaces. That will stop power to the thermostat. The A/C unit is controlled by the furnace thermostat. Call a local heating/AC contractor if you cannot find the fuse.
Look for the emg. shut off switch ,this is usually outside of the furnace area and is usually high on the wall by it self and should have a red cover on it and also check the shut off switch on the unit
