Smelly shower drain in culured marble shower?

Question:I have a stand up shower that has a smelly drain. It is not a trap issue. It smells even when the trap is full and during showering. When I remove the drain cover there is a white coating of something. I use a screw driver to pry pieces off and it smells better until this stuff gathers again. Bleach only works to stop the smell for a short period. This shower is made of cultered marble and the shower/tub combination in my other bathroom, just through the wall, has no similar issues. We had a water softerner hooked up, but are not currently using it.

Answers:
It sounds like the white stuff is a build up of calcium coming from your water. You can buy a shower filter and that will help get the minerals out. An at-home treatment that you can use to get rid of buildup and smell is to pour baking soda down the drain and then pour vinegar. Let this sit over night and then rinse thoroughly. The smell will be gone and it will eat up any residue without harmful chemicals!

I just used a drain unblocker to stop the smell in mine. It gets rid of anything stinky!!
It's possible that the shower is leaking. To test for this, try puting a stopper in the drain and let the shower fill a few inches. Turn off the water and see if the water drains. If it does, its possible the marble is leaking into the shower pan, which could be molding underneath.
