Business license / insurance question?

Question:I live in North Carolina and I need some vinyl siding work done on my home.
I found a small company that has given me a reasonable estimate.
I was wondering if there is a way that I can find out if this comapny is licensed and insured without asking the contractor directly.
Is there a registry of sorts that I can check?

Answers:
better business bureau!! but to see if he is insured you have to ask him for his insurance certificate. DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK THE CONTRACTOR!! call me and i'll do an estimate for you.

I live in Charlotte and I'll tell you I don't think you can find out about the insurance part without asking the contracter directly. You could probably call the City-County Tax Collector's office to verify the business license. You must provide the name of the business exactly as it appears on their records.

PLEASE do not be afraid to ask the contractor for a copy of these items, it is your DUTY as a homeowner to protect your assets!! You need these items to protect you and your family and the contractor will understand, he has a family too. It will also make you appear responsibe and not someone who can be run over or connived.

Asking for a copy of both the business privelege license and insurance card is not a bad thing. Especially with vinyl siding work. Things can go sour in a hurry so make sure your butte is covered. Get a contract in writing of everything that is going to be done, even if you have to write it up yourself, just so that everybody is comfortable with what is expected.

Who is going to provide what, what will be wraped in vinyl, eaves, all doors and framesand windows, are the door sills going to be addressed, etc. Also who is going to clean and haul away debris. It's better to know up front and be prepared rather than be dissapointed and upset later on.
I have a license, it is on file with my county building department. If he refused to show you his license or insurance, he does not have any. It just takes a phone call from me to my insurance company and they will fax my customer proof of insurance.

Hey wizard, no spam!
well i know in the state of Alabama all you have to ask for is the license . because you can not get a license without having your insurance first
And if you do not want to ask him call me and give me his number i will call him and ask if he has it and if he does not i will report him to the city and has his *** fined off!!!!
Your Building Code office should have his licence on file. Due to his attitude, he probably doesn't have one. Get more estimates and forget him. If he has a problem with showing documentation, think how he will act if you are not happy with his work. I would make every effort to report him though.
