Will turning off my pilot light, will it effect my water heater or other things in my home?

Question:The pilot light is the one realted to or beneath the furnace. However, I was recently told I should shut it off during the summer to conserve on my gas bill as it isn't needed for my hot water tank & I don't have central air conditioning. Is this true? How much will I realistically be saving?

Answers:
I THINK YOU WILL SAVE A BUCK OR TWO A MONTH. CALL THE GAS COMPANY AND GET THE CORRECT ANSWER AND LET ME KNOW.

If you turn of a pilot light,it will make the appliance who's pilot become in operable. Hence if you turn off water heater pilot no hot water.the pilot is needed to start the burner on the appliance to let it do what its designed to do.George
I turn my pilot light off too. Why pay to run a pilot light on the heater when you don't need the heater. Relight it in the fall. It saves a little and that is what counts.

Good Luck!
Okay it is not a bad idea now -BUT when you need your heat again do you want to try to light the pilot light? I don't! So I leave my burning - it does not seem to be that big of a cost - heck I have biggie gas bills in the winter (I live in the mountains of West Virginia) so summer is easy. Good Luck!
Leave the pilot light on in your furnace for a couple of reasons.(1) It doesn't cost that much to leave it on .
(2) The pilot light helps to keep the moisture out of the furnace.
(3) It won't have to be re-lit when you want to take the "chill" out
of the house (it'll be on and ready to go at your command).
If you have natural gas service-then you will not notice the difference-there is always a minimum sur charge per month-whether or not you use any gas. If you have propane-then you may save $10 for the summer.
As george said.. each piolt light is for an individual appliance so turning off one does not affect the others.
The savings depends upon the appliance type and age but generally we are talking a small amount.. Te manufacturer or the gas company can give you estimates. it does save but if it is difficult ot get to, it is probably not worth your trouble.
Dont do it at all. It might cost you 25 cents a year to run the pilot light bt it keeps moisture out of the pilot assembly so it prevents rust. You also wont have to worry about relighting the pilot when it turn cold. Turning off the pilot light on a furnace every season is simply asking for corrosion to build up and then you have to replace the assembly or the gas valve which can end up cost you more in the long run.
do you have a pilot light??maybe a buck or two, leave it on if you got one.
It doesn't sound like it would save a lot, I think I would just leave it burning. My furnace has an electronic ignition so I have no pilot light.
if you turn off the pilot light, you will not have any hot water, the pilot light ignites the burner when it is calling for hot water, they do have hot water heaters with electronic ignition,no pilot light.
I would turn it off. However, make sure you can turn it on again if you need to. Our old pilot light was, we found, only accessible if you had arms like a gorilla and could light it while lying on your back!
I was advised not to turn off pilot it keeps moisture from building up and the savings are minimal.
dont turn it off (pilot light)it will have gas leak and it`s toxic gas the only way to save money change your furnace to pilotless furnace saves more money
