Have a well and pump, but no water today, ideas on things to check first?
Question:New to home owner ship in the country. Got up this morning and have no water. What is the first think I should check before calling a repair man? No dumb answers please since this is a legitimate question. Thanks in advance.
Answers:
There are several possibilities.
Depends what kind of well pump you have. 1 Above ground pump or submerged bottom of well pump.
Is the circuit breaker for the pump ON?
Is power getting to the Pressure Switch?
Is the Pressure Switch functioning properly?
These Questions / Hints are about all the Lay-Person can check, at best, and the other Causes or Conditions need to be handed over to a Water Well and/or Electrician Specialist!
Make sure your electricity (fuse) to the pump is working. A pump works on electric to get the water outof the well.
,,first thing I'd check would be if the pump runs when the water turned on and the pressure below 40lbs, if it not then it's probably a circuit breaker or the pressure regulator, if it does come on then one of two things, pump not pumping because the well is dry or the pump lost it's prime and is leaking internally
Like Momma said check the fuse first. Is the pump coming on?
If the pump runs it may have lost it's "prime". To primp the pump turn off the power to the pump, close the valve between the pump and tank, remove the plug at the top of the pump housing, fill the pump slowly with clean water till full, reinstall the plug and turn the power back on. Slowly open the valve between the pump and tank, you should hear water rushing by the valve and you are done! If that failed then make a "well string" by tying a weight on a long string (like a kite string) and lower it in the well to measure how much water is in the well. If there is little to no water wetting your string, the well has gone dry. If you have 3 or more feet of standing water, the pump may have lost it's "prime" again. reprime as nesasary. This may be caused by a faulty foot valve in the well or a leak in the well pipe. Time for professionals then, for you have come to the limit of my experience.
the first thing to check is the CHECK VALVE. if the pump is running, and no water is flowing, you may have lost prime. i dont know where you live but i think you need to make the call, these aare not fixed easy, sorry.
