What is the BEST way to rip up a press and stick tiled floor?

Question:I just moved in to a new apartment, and it has ALOT of work that needs to be done;including ripping up carpets, tiled floors, and painting. I am trying to find the best way to rip them up(the press and stick tiles) because it seems to me that they have been down for a while and when I rip them up they are not coming up very easy. Is there some type of solution I can use to make them come up easier? Please help. I am in dying need of fixing this place it is practically a disaster! All different types of tiles in one room..from brown and blue to white and checkered yellow brown! It's a disaster area and I want to make it purty. Thanks!

I found this out on accident, but the ingredients in Listerine Mouthwash will lift press and stick tiles COMPLETELY off of the floor in one piece. My daughter spilled a huge bottle of it on our bathroom floor, and the tiles all lifted and floated around.I am not sure what ingredient did it, but it worked well. I just picked them up and cleaned and dried the floor, and replaced it with new pieces. Good luck.

I took mine up by putting a heating pad on them and using a putty knife; Comes up fairly easy. Using two heat pads makes the work go fairly quick. Use rubber gloves, it get kind of messy with that soft glue. Put something heavy on the heat pads , like some heavy books etc (wrap them in rags so they don*t get glue on them.) Hope this helps.
Sounds just like the work we had when we bought this house 30 years ago, and the people had 9 cats and 3 turkeys who had the run of the house. No screens!! roaches!! Talk about a disaster.!!!
I know the answer to this one, because I did it in my house! We had stick down tiles that were there for probably close to 10 years. This is what we did.

What you need: an old towel and an iron.

Go individually to each tile and put the towel down and iron it for about a minute or until you can wedge a screwdriver under the tile and get a corner up and then it comes off very easily.
Rent or buy a heat gun. It will make the job easier and unlike some of the other suggestions it is made for the job. Using heat pads and irons for something other than they are made for can lead to problems.
most of the time the glue will soften up with some water... so try that... hope it helps
