Which is better for screwing into wood - coarse or fine wallboard screws? which has better holding strength?
Question:thanks for your answer.
Answers:
It depends on the type of wood you are screwing into, and the purpose for the screw.
A FINE-THREAD screw is used any time you’re driving the screw into a hardwood (i.e., oak, maple, walnut, cherry, hickory, etc.)
The COARSE-THREAD screw has a larger thread diameter and provides greater holding power when driving a screw into soft material such as plywood, particle board, MDF, melamine, and pine.
I agree with sq. If its something like furniture or a hardwood then use a small threaded screw after pre-drilling the hole.
In just regular wood, go with the coarse thread screws. They grab on and don't let go. Coarse threads hold tighter for things like screwing into walls and other instances like that.
The fine screws are used in new builds and are easier to screw in thus taking less time and less torque on the screw gun.
The course screws(often refer ed to as gyp to gyp screws)are used on older work or remodeling and ,depending on the length of the screw, have better holding strength.
I don't know what you are hanging but drywall screws are handy,to say the least-but for cabinets use cabinet screws as they are harder and wont snap off under the weight.
a course wood screw is better because the theards are spaced feuther apart, and thus will hold better than a fine theard
