Why does my air conditioner smell like sewage?
Question:It's really stinky... It definitely seems to be coming from the vents and usually in the afternoon when it starts getting hot outside. We're in a house with our own system so we don't share with anyone. It just started recently. Any ideas?
Answers:
If the condensate drain is plugged it could be some kind of mold growing in the coil drip pan.
You've got to clean or replace the filter inside it! It probably hasn't been changed in a while.
my thought is that there is something in the vents or the vent duct has eroded away and moisture is causing the smell i am just not sure of what it could be.
clean yore intake filter and check your drain tube
Your response makes it sound like you have a central air system. If that is the case, then I would first recommend you go to each vent and check to make sure there is nothing in there. I could be a piece of food that fell in. Scents travel very far in central air systems. If that doesn't work, check to see if a pipe or something broke outside by the main system. You should also check the filter because those can also cuase a scent. Check every room in your house. Maybe it could be a smelly bathroom that has a scent travelling through your system. If all fails, you should call a technician.
If you have a standard wall AC, check your filter or call a tech. There's not much you can do by yourself with those.
