Where can I buy water hardener for my pool and what should I expect to pay?
Question:Every year I have to buy this stuff at the pool store, and the prices seem pretty outrageous... Is there anywhere else you can recommend to buy it, or anything that I can use as a substitute?
Answers:
If you're using a water hardness tester (not just relying on a pool store recommendation) and know that you need it for your type of pool, you could try buying calcium chloride in bulk.
What you're buying as "Water Hardener" is just calcium chloride. Try doing a web search for "bulk calcium chloride".
For those who don't understand why a water hardener MAY be needed: For some people, their water does not contain enough dissolved minerals and the water will then leach these minerals from concrete and tile grout.

They have a good page on pool water - save yourself the hype
What is water hardener? Pool supply stores have everything you need. In all my years of having an in-ground pool in my back yard, I have never had to "harden" the water. Take a water sample to your pool supply store and get them to tell you what the water needs. Expect to pay a lot for the chemicals, as they are always expensive. Sometimes you can order them on line, but you first have to know what to order.
