Why is the sand filter for my in-ground pool spitting out sand into the pool through the return line ?

Question:

Answers:
Despite the "doom and gloom" from Uncle Johnny, the vast majority of chemicals used in the pool are not dangerous, so don't believe it. You use baking soda to raise the alkalinity, borax to raise and buffer the pH as well as act as an algaecide, you can use household bleach to supply chlorine if the chemistry of the water is right, etc. Nothing overtly "dangerous" here.

When did the sand start returning to the pool? Does it happen all the time or only after backwashing? Is the multiport valve still on backwash? Are the lines on the valve hooked up properly? Did you recently change the sand in the filter? Do you leave it on Rinse after backwashing for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute?

Feel free to drop me a line at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and include pictures if you want. I'll be more than happy to help you get to the bottom of the problem and help you correct it.

I have had this problem. There are two possibilities. One is that the Valve seat and spring (at the top of the filter) Are worn or have been damaged by sand and or debris catching between the rubber seals and the seating. In this case the valve must be repaired or replaced. Another possible cause is that "screening receptors" (I don't remmember what they are formally called) are worn. This is less likely.

Repacing the valve is more expensive (than repairing) but repairing is a nightmare. I did both.
Does it usually do it after you have backwashed? If so, make sure you put it in rinse mode after backwashing and before returning to filter mode.
Most likely you have either a cracked stem or laterial inside your filter or your spring or seal is gone in your valve and it is allowing sand to blow by.
I think you got some good advice, but I want to tell you to go
to http://appliancequickfix.com/ and find out about your pool
water. Pool chemicals are extremely dangerous and the pool
companies dont bother to tell you about it.
