I have very rough bumps on the surface of the plaster in the swimming pool. What can I do to eliminate it?

Question:I've used some scale removing stone (not pumice stone) to scrape off the bumps. It works but it's very slow; and the bumps seems to get worse every year. What can I do to get rid of it other than replaster the pool? What's causing it and how do I stop it from continuing? Thanks.

Answers:
Your water is out of balance and your calcium hardness levels are too low. What you are experiencing is the water leeching calcium from the pool surface. This is causing the surface to be eaten away and exposing more insoluble components that appear as raised bumps. Some of these can be quite jagged and will eventually get to the point where it's painful to be in the pool.

Unfortunately at this point there is only one thing to do, replaster the pool.

Are they goose bumps? Try turning the heater up. Otherwise, replaster.
