Lawn Mower String will NOT pull? How come??
Question:Hey all,
I have a lawn mower that when i pull the string to start it, it seems to not budge and be stuck. What's funny is that after a while it seemed like it was going to loosen a bit but became quickly hard to pull again.
Anyone know why it's doing this? I checked the blade and there is nothing underneath that is causing it to not turn.
Also, i have plenty of oil in the mower.
My guess is that something is wrong with the coil, or string is messed up inside that round area where it is..

I have seen this many times and the biggest cause of this problem is that the clutch needs lubing.
What happens is that the clutch on common B&S models gets dirty from dust and will snatch a cord in or acutally stick slightly and move in the direction of the revolution causing the string to get loose and then overlap. On bad cases the clutch swill acutally squeel loudly making it very obvious it needs oil.
When this happens it will virtually make it impossible to pull out because it's tangled.
You can remove the housing and untangle the string.
While the housing cover is off, use WD-40 and spray it in the tiny hole on top of the clucth to keep it lubed.
You never told me what brand lawnmower you have, but I assume it is a Briggs & Stratton.
take the housing off the top of the moter (where the string is coiled up) The string is probably frayed or knotted. You can re wind it onto the spool or if it is damaged, pick up a new string at home depot for like $2.
my neighbor once gave me his lawn mower because it wouldnt pull to start and i took the cover off and there was a chestnut wedged between the cover and the flywheel cover. used it for years...
Unhook the sparkplug wire and try to turn the engine with the mower blade. If it is a recoil starter problem you will be able to turn the engine. If not It could be internal damage to the engine, or the flywheel brake may not be released due to rust or a linkage problem.
