Who do I contact to complain about insurance companies?
Question:Is there a body responsible for monitoring insurance companies?
We have a leak in our kitchen roof, which our insurance company (a major building society) were informed of in December 2006. After months of waiting, they sent someone down in May 07 to fix it. It's taken them a month to plaster the room and now it's leaking again!
Is there an agency responsible for checking consumers rights in such situations? We're at the end of our tethers, please help!

There is. Every state has an Insurance commissioner. They oversee insurance activities in everrty state.
Google your state gov t
web site and look around. If you still can't find it, call your state rep. He will help you with your complaint.
ANY complaint by a policyholder gets investigated.
You have a legal right to take any complaint, that is not addressed to your satisfaction, to an ombudsman. This is their governing body, and can resolve problems quickly.

insurance ombusman
last chap i spoke to was mr mcgregor in brighton
The ombusman is the body that you need, U either call your own insurance company and ask for the address or look it up, I believe there is one main address to use
The Financial Ombudsman, they cover insurance companies
Hi your not alone here, I hate insurance companies if you miss a payment they are on your back straight away but it takes them ages to do anything when you need to claim,
We there are 3 things you can do
The first is complain in writing to your insurer as the other orginisation wont listen to you untill you have done so.
Second if you dont get a satisfactory result within 7 days you can contact the insurance ombudsman at www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk... they deal with complaints from customer and can force the insurer to pay your claim and deal with it quicker
If you still dont get the response to think you should you can contact www.fsa.gov.uk/ this is the governing body for all financial institutions it is a department of Trading Standards
Good Luck
Presuming you are talking about a UK insurer they are regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and their complaint handling service is the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). Each FSA regulated insurer is obliged to have it's own complaint process in place, and you will need to take this route first. If you apply straight to the FOS they will refer the complaint back to the insurer for the process to be followed before they take it up. So, first go to insurer and tell them you wish to make a formal complaint and ask them to clarify their process. If you are not satisfied with the outcome you can then go to the FOS - http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk...

Your first point of contact has to be the insurance company - they will provide you with details of how to complain in their policy document. They must acknowledge the complaint in 7 days, reply in 28 and give a final response 28 days after that with details of how to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If you go that way then the insurance company have to pay the costs (about £350) and are obliged to accept the FOS reccomendation - but you are not.
