Craftsman Lawn Tractor Oil Leak?

Question:I have a LT 4000 Craftsman Lawn Tractor, I think it is about 10 to 15 years old. Its leaking oil really bad out the bottom right around were the shaft comes out. Can someone tell me where it might be coming out and how to fix this.

Answers:
You have a seal leak, but since the tractor is very old and new seal might not stop it becasue of wear and tear around the case.

In any event it will not hurt to replace the seal since they are inexpensive and easy to install.

You will need a extension socket to reach up in the hole located in the pully and unscrew that.

In some models you have to remove the pully before the engine can be removed. The newer models come with a wide enough hole to remove the engine and pully all at once.

Once you remove that pully clean the shaft area real good and take a screw driver and slide it inside the oil ring adjacent to the shaft and pop it out.

Slide it off and get a new one and use a pvc pipe that will size up to the oil ring and tap the new in place evenly.

Hopefully the damage will be minor and the ring will stop the oil leak.

Put your engine back on and bolt it down all reverse procedure and happy mowing.

there is a seal which keeps the oil from leaking around the shaft. it's rubber and need to be replaced. if you have never done such work, have someone who knows how do it. while you are at it, consider having the engine rebuilt entirely. the expense is not that much and will give you a like new motor which should last another 10 yrs.
I don't think that it is hard to change the shaft seal. The motor may have to come off the mower to get to it. You can go to outdoordistributers.com and type in the engine model number. It will give you an expoded view of the engine and the part number.
Cristanine is absolutely correct in everything he said! Whoever gave him a thumb-down need to reconsider their ill-chosen vote.
If you follow the directions from Cris, the oil problem will be reparied.
