What can I use in my westward windows to reflect the sun's heat?
Question:I have westward windows in the back of my home, this includes my bedroom windows. My room gets extremely hot in the evening. What do you suggest I do to the windows to keep it cool (besides boarding them up ha, ha)? Home-used material only.
Answers:
Reynolds wrap. Heavy duty. It will surprise you the difference it makes. It did me!
tinfoil (shiny side out)
use a film coating. it's much the same as used for car windows. for the real budget-restricted person, tape aluminum foil to the window with the shiny side out to reflect the heat.the room will be dark, unless you use the film or foil on only a major protion of the window, while leaving some uncovered to allow greater light.
depending on which film you use, the amount of heat, and light, can be reduced by as much as 90%. cars can only have film rated at 75% reduction on the front and side windows where the driver sits. the rear side and back glass can use 90% reduction film. the rating is for the amount of heat transferral reduction through the film.
I use inexpensive bamboo shades on mine~and hang them on the outside of the window.
Our kitchen and 2 west facing bedrooms were seeing temps in the high 80s ~ the bamboo shades kept the rooms a good 15 degrees cooler.
Ditto on the tinfoil.
