Answers:
Yes. You should set the power settings and have the monitor and or the disks turn on after a short while to conserve energy

Just because the power lead is receiving power, the computer doesn't have to actually running. Can't you just get it to shut down and power itself off when you aren't using it?

And set the BIOS so it doesn't start the computer up when the power supply comes on.

Leaving it running all the time will cause it to put heat into the room, which means your air conditioner will have to work harder.
mine is on 24/7

it is actually worse for your computer if you turn it on aand off all the time, due to the heat expanding and contraction the parts in it as they cool
Its ok to leave computer on but you should try and keep AC on a outlet of its own to prevent overloading.
People already made some good points: though it might not hurt your computer to be on all the time, it WILL build up heat, which is not only making your AC work harder, but is not good for the computer (my sister's crashed due to overheating).

You should set the power settings (on the control panel), so the hard dive shuts off after a certain time, say one hour (if you're not using it). You can also set it to "hibernate" or "Standby", so your work will be saved. With Windows XP, hold Shift, while clicking on "Standby", if you do this manually, and it will go into "hibernate". I've never heard of a computer crashing due to being turned off (unless, as one person said, you turned it on again repeatedly, within a short time).

Another concern that's quite true is that Air conditioners use a LOT of electricity and should have the appropriate, separate outlet (in the US, it'd be no less than 200 amps). Otherwise, you might short out the circuit, which would also shut off your computer, possibly causing data loss.

Also, remember to unplug your computer during electrical storms, as no surge suppressor will help if your building is struck by lightning!
get and extension chord with several, outlets rated for the same size amps that you are using.then you can shut the ac of.
