Will a GFCI outlet at the start of a circuit protect all trailing outlets?

Question:Finishing a room in the basement and want GFCI protection for all outlets short of installing a GFCI breaker. Thanks...

Answers:
It will if you have it wired correctly. The outlet should come with directions on how to do it properly or you can look it up or buy a book on wiring at most large home improvement stores.

no a GFCI outlet only protects that one outlet. If you want the whole circuit protected I would suggest buying all GFCI outlets for your basement. Good luck!
No
no g f i ground fault interrupt circuit are used around areas with water, dishwasher, kitchen,& bath sinks. desighen to snap when shorteed .like a mini circuit breaker, to prrvent fire in panal
Wolfatrest is correct. You should have a document included with the new GFI on how to accomplish proper circuit. One thing you do not want to do is have several GFI's on the same circuit. It will result in nuisance trips.
Your local hardware store should be able to advise and local library has some how to books are also helpful.
if you have a water problem, its okay to attach the feed to the gfi outlet just make sure that you use the right number wire and the right size circuit breaker at panel.# 14 wire uses 15amp breaker and gfi,#12 wire uses a 20 amp breaker and 20 amp gfi.
yes it will ,the number of outlets you can protect from one single GFCI might depend on your local codes but it is generally (6) and NEC has no problem wiring multiple outlets to one GFCI in condition of course that you make proper connections. the even sell little stickers that you put on regular plugs that say GFCI
The GFCI recept should have 4 screws. 2 labeled line and 2 labeled load. The line side is the power coming in from the source, usually the breaker panel. The 2 load screws will feed the down stream recept. There is a limit to the number of recept's you can install on the load side. This info and a wiring diagram should be in the instructions that come with the GFCI.
i agree with Dr ray it can be done the trailing receptacles have to be hook to the load side of main gfi receptacle. as to the amount of receptacles you can add like he said that may be a area code thing but also depends on distance. i think somebody said six that sounded decent i don't know if i would do any more.

if u think u have this already they make a nice three prong tester that's idiot proof for telling if wiring is correct but you could also use it to see if a outlet turns off when you hit the test button on the main gfi.

good luck always remember to verify power is off and if you cant figure out right breaker or if you doubt your safety turn the main off killing whole house sometimes a outlet box or ceiling box can have multiple breakers controlling circuits passing through. they also sell a device that looks like a pen that can pick up electrical field and will alarm u if it detects live circuit. they also make that same device into common electrical tools at some hardware stores.
dr ray is right on, Just keep in mind that a GFCI is only designed to power up 2 additional outlets.

So if you wish to power more than 3 outlets you'll have to run an additional GFCI off its own breaker.
