Air conditioning problems condensor freezeing up literally?
Question:HI I live in a rental unit..idiot maintaince kid checked the ac 3 times now..the condensor outside is frosting over..cutting off the ac..
when the ac unit thaws out..it starts back up...
idiot kid said it was just the filter..which was replaced..
now unit does work at all..
and yes he recharged the system..
do you think it is the blower?

I've never heard of an air conditioner condenser frosting. I've seen evaporator coils in solid ice, or a heat pump in winter iced over, but never a high-pressure, high-temperature condensing coil frosting.
Contact central maintenance, and have them send an HVAC professional with a video camera and a scientist who wants to disprove the laws of thermodynamics. This is really weird.
An undercharged unit will frost the evaporator, but not the condenser. An overcharged unit will just run and not remove the heat. If it is a heat pump running in heating mode and it is undercharged, this could cause frosting in the outdoor unit.
If this is a window unit, something is very wrong. How did the boy recharge the unit?
Do you have air movement inside? Are the evaporator fins clogged? Is the condensing unit dirty, do the fins need cleaning?

It must have a leak then. When the condenser freezes up like that, it's a sign that the unit is low on freon. If he's recently recharged it, then it should be checked for a leak, since it's still freezing up like that.

It's not the compressor or the condenser that's freezing up, it's the evaporator coils. Don't force the AC to run when the air temperature is low.
It happens in my house too. They need to set the main temperature up a little bit, that is the only thing that cures the problem with ours, unless they want to pay the maintaince guy to hold a hair dryer over the unit all night because that is only other thing that will help and restore your a/c. I know when I hear the ice I can get up and literally see it frozen right on the condensor, you're not crazy.
It sounds like the unit may have a overcharge on it or its possible it may have a bad freon leak which needs repair
blow... spray the fins with fine water spray .. most probably they are clogged ... clean both the front and the rear fins ... if this dosent help the it definitely is a leak in yr system ..
