How do I install a Fan to a light switch?
Question:Ok I have a ceiling fan and the wires going into it are green on one end and black white and blue on the other. The switch I'm trying to connect it currently opperates an outlet. It has a black wire going to one end and a red wire going to the other. There are other wires in back of the switch that aren't connected. One group is white wires and the other is just copper with no guard around it. Please someone help me. I tried this like a year ago and ended up having to pay an electritian like 150 bucks for 20 minutes work. I really don't want to do it again. Thank you so much
Answers:
First, turn off the breaker so you don't shock yourself.
The white is always the neutral and does not connect to the switch. Never connect any dark wires to the white wires - this will cause a short circuit.
The uninsulated wire is always the ground. It may connect to a ground screw on the switch and to the box if it is metal.
The fan needs to be connected to the switched leg off the switch. This will be the wire currently going to the outlet. I would guess the red wire from your description. You have a 50/50 chance here.
The fan will also need a neutral wire, so connect the white wire from the fan to the bunch of white wires in the box using a wire nut.
The fan will need a ground, so connect the green wire from the fan to the uninsulated wires in the box.
If the fan is constantly on and the switch has no effect, then you picked the wrong wire between the red and black ones.
