Will refinishing my acoustic guitar change the sound, and will it decrease the value?

Question:Its a Gibson Gospel 1970,s model. The clear coat on top has some cracks but nothing is wrong with the body.

Answers:
Older guitars frequently have this- it's called checking, and it really doesn't affect the sound- take it to a reputable shop-I don't mean Guitar Center-look for a small local place-with its own tech in-house -talk to them about the guitar-you should be able to get some good tips about caring and preserving it. Good Luck!

It shouldn't. The acoustics come from inside, not out.
If it is potentially valuable, you should research the type of varnish to use. The wrong material or a bad job of preparation could alter the sound quality and reduce the future value of the insrument.
If you refinish it then yes it will affect the value. Just watch antiques roadshow enough and you learn this. Take it to a restorer in order to have it repaired.
