How can you tell if a soffit is empty without cutting a hole in it?

Question:It's above my kitchen cabinets and there are no air ducts running on that side of the room.

Answers:
This soffit is for holding up your cabinets. If you are sure that no heating ducts are in that area, it's a pretty safe bet that nothing is in them.

Two other possibilities here. Plumbing lines/venting and/or electrical. Bulkheads are an ideal way to route these structures. The real question here is why do you want to know if it is hollow?
