Tap spinning with no effect?

Question:Our cold water tap spins round both ways, but doesn't haven't any effect on the flow of the water (i.e. we can't turn the cold water on). I'm guessing something inside the tap may be snapped - as the hot water tap is fine, and water supply is fine to all other taps in the house - what could be causing it?
Thanks!

Answers:
Pop the cap off and check the screw inside hasn't snapped or come loose from where it connects to the valve

Sounds like you need a new washer
sounds to me like the stem on the faucet may have broke in the closed position just turn off both valves under the sink and remove both hot and cold stems and see what the problem is if everything looks ok then try opening up the hot supply valve it could be there.
your taps need replacing, the wear and tear had worn away the shape inside.
The tap is broken, you can shut off the water, take it off and try to find a matching style at the hardware store, which can be a problem. If you don't care, then any tap will do. This will only work if each tap has it's own spout. The job is difficult but not impossible, still you might be better off with a plumber and buying a new assembly, see below.

You can't fix the tap by buying a new part because the center which is specially shaped is worn out. No hardware supply will carry the part.

In newer taps, the two taps come togethor in an assembly and the water comes out of one spout so you can mix the temperatures in a small mixing pipe that takes water from both taps and leads to a single spout and you can get the exact temperature you want. if that is the case, it's best to call the plumber and have the entire assembly replaced. It's a bit hard to do yourself. The hot water still works because that tap is not broken, but only hot water is going into the outlet pipe that leads to the spout.
.
who knows!! the valve thingy has probably broken. youre gonna be paying a nice fat sum to some plumber to fix it! oops!good luck xx
A lot of taps have a plastic piece connecting the spindle to the outside turning piece this breake so the outer piece cant turn the spindle yo can just replace the top part of the tap (parts at B&Q ) if it is faily modern These are sold in pairs so you still match the two taps
I'm a little surprised that you posted the question in the first place, surely you would have phoned a plumber, after all how are you getting drinking water?
Its like the guy standing beside his car with a puncture, asking passers-by what could have caused his tyre to go flat.
The spindle inside the tap has become seperated from the capstan. The tap body will have to be dismantled to repair it. It is just a matter of screwing the two parts together, but remember it is a LEFT HANDED THREAD.
