Hot Water Tank and CO monitor problems?
Question:Our Hot Water Tank smells and CO monitor gets to 167 ppm when it runs. What is the deal?
Answers:
It sounds like you have a blocked vent. Perhaps some animals decided to nest there or something.
Turn off the water heater. Let the unit cool down and then clean the ENTIRE chimney vent out. Get on the roof, remove the rain cover. Go to the basement and remove the bottom fo the chimney vent. You should be able to see no blockage. Reconnect everything and make sure the vent piping captures the heater exhaust and that the line is never level or below level as the exhaust travels out, the line needs to always be uphill as it travels to the vertical.
This should do it.
I would jump on this; CO build up is not a good thing.
Replace all vent that is rusted out, weak, or worn.
BE CAUTIOUS on the roof.
sounds like ventalation to me.
