Should I turn off pilot light from furnace in summer...?
Question:I'm intimidated by the furnace and its functions, and I was wondering if it is worth it to shut if off in the summer, or just keep it on.
Does it
a) cause unnecessary emmisions
b) waste gas (natural gas furnace)
Thanx!

We always turned ours off. However, someone better be handy enough to light it again in the fall or your best bet would be to leave it on. You would be surprised just how much money you can save by turning off that one little pilot light. Make SURE all gas supplied to the pilot are off or you risk danger from explosion. That is why you better have an in-residence handyman around. Gas isn't somethng that should be fooled with by the inexperienced.
no otherwise unusdgas, that is otherwise burnt bythe piolet will leak into your house and kill you.
keep it on- it is safer.
no bad idea!
Leave the pilot light on!!

if the valve isn't stuck in the on position and you or someone you know is comfortable with turning it back on then yes yes yes turn it off...it saves money and the environment...most furnaces will also have a gas shut-off valve very close to the furnace ans you should als sht this valve off as well to prevent any gas leaking through the gas valve on the furnace (rare but it can happen) most gas valves on the old standing pilot units have basic instructions on how to relight the pilot when you need to turn it back on...a better suggestion would be to replace your furnace with a new high eff model as the old standing pilot units are usually around 60 % eff and the high eff units (that do not have a pilot) are over 90% eff....much more economical to run.
