Replacing the freon?
Question:I'm going to my grandmas vacation home in Palm Desert and the freon may be out in the AC unit. I was curious as to how much ti will cost to put enough in for a few days.
Answers:
R-22 is running about $100 for 30 pounds. You will certainly not need that much for one system. The HVAC company will charge a markup for the refrigerant and a service charge.
First of all, you have to have a license to buy freon. Depending on the unit, it will take a few dollars, up to $100.00 or more, plus the gauges if you don't have them. My guess is if you don't have any of these, have a professional do it.
wal mart has cans of it for around $22.00 it works and its easy to do it yourself
Call a refrigeration company and ask.
When I had a brake job done the mechanic also checked for a leak in the a/c. There wasn't dye in the freon that had been in there so no leak could be seen. They put some in along with the freon. It cost me about $67 and they said if it leaked again they would be able to see where the leak was, and wouldn't charge me for fixing it. I don't know about where you live, but in Wisconsin they aren't allowed to sell it so you have to either go to Illinois and buy it, or go to a mechanic. I found this mechanic by going to the BBB page and they emailed members and I had a choice to pick from, some called, some emailed me. I wouldn't travel without it being checked by a mechanic. There is nothing worse than being in a car without a/c in a hot region.
I would assume that grandma has her system covered under some kind of maintenance program with a local HVAC company there. If not, she should to cover any issues such as this one.
