Home repairs; removing glue?
Question:I'm trying to do a few things to really give my home some curb appeal. I just bought it a few months ago and I want to pull up the carpet/turf-like material that the previous owners put on the front steps. The steps are brick and I think the brick is beautiful. The only problem is that they glued this material to the brick and even if we can pull it up, there will still be glue on the brick.
I don't know what kind it is or what kind of glue a person would use to do something like that. But do you think it can be removed? Any suggestions?
Answers:
Try to remove the glue with petrol.brush on and the glue should soften a bit ...rub off with a cloth and a scraper...be careful not to scratch the brickwork. Then clean the bricks with a mixture of hydrochloric acid and water ..5 parts water to 1 part acid this should fizz a bit when applied ...scrape clean then wash or hose down with water. Repeat whole process if needed. All of the above should be done in small sections at a time, 2 foot square approx
good luck
Pull up a corner and try various solvents such as paint thinner (mineral spirits), denatured alcohol, xylene, lacquer thinner, if it is not polyurethane, something should dissolve it. It it's poly, nothing will.
i'm not sure of a brand name. i'd go to your local hardware store, ace, true-value, home depot. they should be able to get you right stuff. only other thing would be to pull the carpet stuff up and sand-blast your steps. good luck and best wishes.
