I am staining my old aggregate cement sidewalk, using a transparant stain.?
Question:The directions for staining the concrete-cement on the paint can, is to clean it then etch it. So what I need to know is the best method for cleaning and also the proportion of muriatic acid to water for the etching process.. .
Answers:
Clean with dish detergent and a scrub brush to remove grease, oil, and dirt. Then use a solvent-based stripper to remove any previous sealants (follow the directions on the can). Make sure you wet the surface before using the muriatic acid. Mix the acid according to the directions on the container for etching (usually 20% acid and 80% water). Apply it to the surface and wait however many minutes the container says (around 5). Hose it off. Allow it to dry and then brush/blow off any loose cement. Apply the sealant/stain in accordance with package directions (pay close attention to whether or not it's too hot outside to apply it).
