Is it better to turn off an air conditioner every night or to leave it on?

Question:im trying to extend the life span of my air comditioners.

Answers:
If it's a newer multi-stage air conditioner then leave it on. It has two compressors. A large one for initial cool down and a much smaller one for maintaining the temperature. They're VERY energy efficient.

If it's an older/cheaper one then it really depends. As long as you turn it on before the heat of the day and turn it off after the heat of the day, then you should be fine. Otherwise you're going to burn a lot of electricity and put a lot of wear and tear on the compressor trying to cool your already hot house down.

Houses naturally generate heat. Body heat, ovens, stoves, and incandescent lights (which act as mini space heaters) all dump heat into your home. If it's 70 degrees outside at night, then it may be 80 in your house with the windows open.

I hate the humidity, so I run mine at night just to keep the humidity down. Also, it does stay hot here in Nebraska at night. 85 degrees and 80% humidity isn't unheard of at 11PM at night. So, you have to take into consideration your local climate and how warm it is at night and how well you tolerate humidity.

If you don't naturally get a breeze through your house with the windows open then you're going to need to run fans in all the bedrooms (and anywhere else you're at after dark) and running a dozen fans isn't any easier on the electric bill than just running the air conditioner.

The best way to extend the life of your air condition is to keep the air filter clean/replaced and have it inspected/serviced every year by a licensed professional.

l get the house cool during the day then turn it off at night and use a fan by the bed. I'm very comfortable and save on my electric bill. I think we should all do this.
we turn ours off and just use the ceiling fans. This helps extend the life of the AC and cut down on the electric bill. Hope this helped you. You could also use a window fan.
i think is better to leave it on so you will never get hot and you can get a lot of covers when you get cold
It depends on the outside temperature and how good your insulation is. What you should know is the cost in money and wear is much greater to lower a temperature than to keep it the same. So often it is better to keep it on. It depends on what time of day you plan to turn it back on. There are seasons where it is better to use fans and turn it off.
It is easier for an A/C unit to maintain a temperature than to reach a temperature. Also, it costs less to keep an even temperature than to reach a temperture. So I would just leave it on. We live in NC and leave it on unless we open the windows. We tried the whole "myth" of turning the thermostat up during the day when we weren't home to lower our power bill but it didn't work.
Turning the air conditioner completely off at night will not extend it's life span, since it will have to run longer in the morning to achieve your level of comfort. But turning the air conditioner up several notches, degrees, will save on your electric bill each month, and increase it's life span in that it won't work as hard to keep the temperature at a higher setting than a lower one.

I would suggest, if your thermostat is set at 68 during your waking hours, you could turn it up to maybe 70 or even 72 at night and as I just stated, the air conditioner will work less to keep the area cool if adjusted up several degrees. That said, the recommended setting for summer is 80 degrees in the face of high demands being put on the system today.
best to get a programable stat if you want to "save money" you can set it to a slightly higher temp at night if you want (no more than a 3-5 degrees) as it will be hard on the system to bring the temp back down to your desired daytime temp. also this will give you the same option for when you are away at work during the day...i do not suggest that you turn the unit off completely as others have already told you this is not going to save energy and will not extend the life of the equipment...if you don't want to upgrade the stat then just turn it on and don't adjust the temp more than a few degrees from your typical comfort level.
that depends on how hot the room gets,if you don"t need it at night shut it off.
