Black mold?
Question:I live in a apartment and a few months ago the bathtub upstairs started leaking onto my ceiling. NOw we have a big crack in the ceiling and the ceiling has black spots on it. I think it is mold. The landlord finally fixed the bathtub upstairs friday. The painters are suppose to come in today and fix the ceiling but I have not seen them yet. My son has so many allergies and also has asthma and one that that he is allergic to is mold. My husband starts sneezing and coughing when he comes home from work. How do people get rid of black mold? I am afraid they are just going to come in and paint over it and that is not going to sit well with me. My family has been dealing with this for 2 months now and I am sick of it. Anything I can do?
Thanks
Jamie

The mold has to be removed completely. It is easy to do when on sheetrock. Just cut out the moldy part and replace with new piece of sheetrock and mud texture and paint.. If they do not do this you will still smell the mold . If you still have the allergic and sick reactions to this you do not have to pay rent until this problem is resolved and not just covered up. Rmember that the other side of the sheetrock will be very moldy.
Ask any restoration company, if you had a leak from above.YOU WILL HAVE MOLD IN THE CIELING< NOT A LITTLE MILDEW. trust me.
Also check with your local health department....they will say the same..HMMMM
Grab a pail, put in 3 quarts of warm water and 1 quart of Clorox. Get a sponge mop and put on rubber gloves and safety glasses if you have them. Mop the spot until it is clean, you can go ahead and mop the rest of the ceiling too. Now when they paint, you know it will be clean underneath.
Also, you should use this solution anytime you paint your walls for better paint adhesion.
Just because it's black, doesn't mean it's the "black mold" spore. Being in the bathroom I've seen much more mildew there than actual mold. Before the painters come spritz it with tilex. It's a very good mold killer. Then when they paint over it not only will you not see it, but the tilex will actually kill any mold that might be present.
it's not mold it's mildew and it can form in just a few days spray
diluted bleach 60% / 40% water , a good painter will know how to address that situtaion
Just wanted to backup the 3 parts water (cups?) and 3 parts bleach. I had a water leak and mold resulted. I used the bleach solution and the mold is gone. I used a spray bottle to apply it. It is easy and effective.
I have done some checking around and find that Shuberules knows what he is talking about. And I too have had to deal with these same problems doing repairs for multiple apartment communities.
you can clean the area yourself with bleach and water, but before they paint ,tell them about your problem they may suggest painting with a product called KILZ for a primer before the actual top coat.Any real pro will know this already!
