AC / Heating until need to be replaced, how much?
Question:I want to replace my existing AC and heating unit for my 1900 sq ft home. Assuming they can simply remove the old unit and plug in a new one, what is a ballpark figure on something like this?
The unit I have now uses gas for heat and electric to cool.

That's not an easy answer. It will depend on many things on whether you want just a basic unit, or one with the ability to do more things like control the mold and allergens in your house. it also depends on the area of the country you live in - some areas are slightly more competitive than others. However, expect to spend no less than 5 to 6 grand and up to 10 to 12 grand.
A lot of contractors also offer financing these days as well as extended service contracts.
Make sure you get a unit that has R410A refrigerant in the AC unit, not R22. R22 units will not be sold in just a few more years, so getting replacement parts for them could get to be a problem, plus R410A units are generally more efficient.
You might even want to consider getting a Heat Pump instead of an AC and Furnace, depending on the price of gas in your area.
Some utility companies offer rebates for higher SEER units, ask the contractor
When we changed our furnace and added A/C a few years back.. We had 1600 square feet of space and it was in the $2500.00 range.. but check around you might be able to get a deal especially if getting both done at once!!
First off why are you replacing the whole thing? A lot of companies out there try to tell you just because something is old it needs replacing. You would not junk your car just because it is 10 years old.
If just the furnace is bad then just replace the furnace. If the compressor in the A/C system is bad just replace that. I see a lot of people junk perfectly good systems just because they are old and a money hungry contractor wants another big money sale.
As far as the cost goes it depends on your local market. Some places they will try to get you to finance a system for $5000. Others you can get it done for $2500-$3000. Be sure to shop around.
If you get a variable speed blower in the furnace you will be adding a minimum of $700 to the price. You have to figure out if the slight energy savings will ever pay your $700 back.
