How do I change my water faucet on the outside?
Question:
Answers:
typically outside spigots are attached with pipe threads. That means you:
1. turn off the main water supply
2. use a pipe wrench to remove the old spigot.
3. clean off the threads
4. tape with teflon tape
5. screw on new spigot
6. slowly turn on water supply checking for leaks.
if you live in an area that freezing is a problem and you have a crawl space or a basement the spigot may be the type where the valve portion is inside the wall. This will require you to get under the house where the threaded portion is.
is it PVC pipe or copper ?
if its PVC just cut the pipe and replace it with a new faucet you will need a new fitting ,PVC glue/cleaner
but if its copper you will have to re solder the copper pipe
lots of different scenarios. first shut the water off. can you get a wrench behind the faucet? if you can and it has threads, use two wrenches. one to unscrew and one to make sure you dont twist the pipe. if you cant then its under the house you go. unless you are on slab, then its into the wall you go(usually the sheetrock side as it is easier to repair). under the house, copper piping, cut the copper pipe, remove the faucet and pipe, get a faucet like what you have, install a pipe the same length, put it in, then go under and solder a coupling to connect. hope this helps, i could write a book on this one.
you mean the hose bib??if you dont know what its called to start with,it would be a real good idea to call oh say a plumber.
MattB is right...you could write a book on it but unfortunately his book would be way confusing because he confused me!! Not all hose bibbs have threads.some are soldered on and when homeowners listen to friends or ppl on Answers who say "Just twist it off" they twist the pipe in the wall and I get to make money off Do It Yourselfer's mistakes. Another thing is that it may be a frost proof which is screwed into a pipe in the wall and may be hard to remove. Unless youre 100% confident in your ability or the people on Answers...call a plumber.that's the best advice you can get.not just cuz it came from me either...it just is...call a plumber
