How does gas get into the oil in the 9 HP B&S mower engine?

Question:Also blowing smoke out of the muffler, along with oil.

Answers:
If you have tipped the lawnmower up you can also get oil from the crankcase into the head..where the spark plug fits in..to drain pull the spark plug.then take the rope(crank) and pull it 3 or 4 times and see if oil spits out the spark plug hole.after this clean spark plug, put back in..then crank it up..it will still smoke just a bit..then will clear up afterwards.

Cracked block or really sloppy piston rings.
Gas can get into the oil by the carb leaking into the cylinder and then the gas goes by the piston rings and then contaminates the oil. You also describe symptoms of a mower that has been tipped up with the carb on the bottom side. This will allow engine oil to flow (rather quickly) into the air filter. This smothers the engine and makes it run rough and smoke excessively!
Try removing the air filter and running the engine *OUTSIDE* for about ten minutes, if it clears up it was the air filter!
probably you have a bad needle and seat in the carb that is allowing gas to flow into the intake manifold and from there into the crankcase. that is causing the level in the crankcase to rise and that in turn will cause the smoke and oil to blow out the muffler. replace the inlet needle and seat in the carb drain out the oil gas mix from the crankcase, refill with new oil to the proper level, that's very important, and that should solve your problem.
