How can you tell if a lawnmower battery is 12 volts or 6 volts?
Question:I need to charge a neighbor's battery. When my charger is set to 6 volts it indicates the battery is charged, but when the charger is set to 12 volts is indicates it is charging. I do not want to cause damage to a 6 volts battery by trying to charge it to 12 volts.
Answers:
Acid batteries have 2.2V if fully charged (rare occasion). ~
So, 3 cells 6V, 6 cells 12 V battery.
look on the battery
1. Use a Voltmeter on it to test it. Then you will know for absolute certainty.
2. Look at the device that was know to function with this battery connected - is it 6V or 12V.
3. As stated above - count the cells.
They don't use 6 volt batteries on lawnmowers anymore.
You wont damage it, mine does the same thing and I never knew why
12 volt batteries are for cars and bigger things. most all lawnmowers have 6 volt batteries. hope this helps you
Count the cells. Two volts per cell.
You don't say how old the lawnmower is so I am assuming it could be either 6 or 12 volts. Use a volt meter across the terminals. If it reads 6 volts then you know your charger is right. If 6 volts is not enough to turn the engine over, then it probably requires 12 volts. If it turns the engine over with 6 volts, it is a 6 volt system.
You can also count the junber of cells, as mentioned above.
I am assuming there is no label on the battery or you would have checked that before you asked.
