Breaker flipping from garage door opener, need help.?
Question:We've recently installed a garage door opener. It worked great for a week. Now it suddenly is flipping the breaker and the garage door won't open. It happens at least once a day. What could be the problem/solution?
Answers:
Couple of things to check:
- The breaker rating. If it's rated at 15amps and you have the garage door opener, lights, maybe a freezer in the garage, you could be exceeding the limit - especially since motors to to require a 'spike' of electricity to start moving.
- any jams, or misalignment of mechanical parts. If there is a chain/sprocket assembly, check the chain tension and, if you can, disconnect the motor and try turning the drive by hand (get someone to take the weight of the door while you turn it.) Check if parts need or can be lubricated.
- other signs of mechanical trouble: vibration or squeaking noise, or if the motor becomes very hot to the touch. It's normal for motors to run warm to the touch, but if you burn your fingers there's something wrong.
- There's always a chance that the motor itself is faulty. If nothing above works out (and you have a warranty) bring it back and get a new one.
Good luck.
It's maybe a short in one of the wires.
check to see if there is a loose connection in the wiring, if not that check that you have the right size breaker
You have something else that is drawing power from that breaker and it is overloading when the garage door is being opened. You may need to put the garage door on it's own breaker or what ever it is that is tripping the breaker on another breaker. But you need to find out what other thing is on when the garage door is opening to cause the breaker to trip. God Bless and Good Luck.
