Which company makes the most reliable central air units? My house is a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house 1650 sq feet
Question:I am also having an air conditioning guy make me ducts in my garage so that my garage will be cool also. I guess this would make my total cooled space about 1800 sq feet. I currently have a 3 ton unit but i had 2 different companies come and give me estimates and neither pushed it on me but both said I "MIGHT" need a 4 ton unit to keep all the rooms as cool as I'd like to.
One quoted me about $3300 for a 4 ton i forgot what the brand was and the other brand was a trane 4 ton for $3600
Any thoughts on this?

The contractor may have suggested a 4 ton model because of the heat load of the garage. You have a huge slab of limestone (cement floor) in the garage that can soak up lots of heat energy, especially if it is on the south side of your home. Most garages are not finished with insulation, yours may be, but 99% of the garages I've been in just house the car (if they are lucky) and tons of stuff that they should throw out but can't. All this stuff soaks up heat, and the A/C will need to remove the heat.
Trane makes good machines, as does Carrier, Bryant, and Lennox. These companies also have lower-end models that don't have the fancy name, don't look as nice, and aren't rated as high a SEER. They work OK.
Like the other poster stated, you can ride in a Lincoln, or you can drive a Ford. Both are essentially the same, will get you where you are going.

A/C brands are like cars and corn flakes, everybody has a favorite. Mine is Lenox. I agree with the 4 tons. That price sounds reasonable.
most likely a three and one half ton would do the job.what you need to have done is a heat- cool analysis...what this does is calculates how well your home and garage is insulated how many doors and windows would lose or gain heat or cool whether they are double pane or not and what directions the longest side of your home faces that has the most windows and doors...4 tons would be more than enough to handle what you need and for the price they quoted on the trane unit and the warranty trane offers ...that is the one i would get.trane is a very good unit and ten years parts and labor is hard to beat..
4 ton i think is too big...get the heat cool analysis that the 40y veteran has suggested ...it may come out that you only need 3t of cooling...most of the a/c manufacturers are using almost the exact same components inside their units with just a different package on the outside...pick a brand that has a good warranty that is being offered by a contractor that has been around for awhile and you can't go wrong ...
