Prolems with wireing?

Question:My tv started smoking and my washing machine doesnt work. The voltage is fine. could it be a problem with the fuses? What problems with wireing could it be?

Answers:
TVs are not designed to smoke. There is something wrong with the set. Unplug and have it inspected by someone who knows what they are doing.

When the TV started smoking, it was drawing too much current, and the fuse overheated and burned to protect you. You should be able to replace the fuse and operate your washer again. If the fuse melts again, you have a problem that an electrician will need to find.

check voltage to neutral at each plugs make sure it 120 VAC if you for some reason lost your neutral the plugs could be anything from 120 to 240 VAC depending on back feed. your house is wired for 220 there is no120 VAC service a lot of people don't realize this. What you end up with is 240 volts divided into two 120 volt circuits because of the center tap on main transformer on post. You lose that center tap you have a 220 VAC source that fluctuates with loading. Checkt he neutral or have someone that is knowledgable it only will take a minute to check.
for one fuse's and breakers protect from over current or short ckt only they do not regulate voltage it sound to me like a spike come in from the main power line it could be miles away.

other poss able cause's
floating ground
open neutral

As for the 240 volt is your main power supply it comes in on the main line 120 volt per 'phase' in the panel or fuse box half of the 120 volt branch ckts are on one side of the panel and the others are on the other side of the bus or 'phase'
The only way to get 240 voltage is to cross the 'phase's' 120 + 120 = 240

Sometimes a spike can happen if the transformer on the power pole starts to go bad have your local power co check the main incoming line from there pole and to check there service drop to your house a bad spot in there line can cause a spike I had this happen on my own house if that's ok than it would be wise to call a electrician to check things out just to be safe
